There was no food fight today. Instead, there was a pretty impressive show of force from the adults. Almost all of our teachers came to lunch, acting casual while strategically chatting with kids all over the cafeteria. Parents I called yesterday showed up to babysit their children and their friends. The security officer was roaming and even the lunch staff was alert. Lunch was the calmest, cleanest, most efficient experience we’ve ever had.
Granted, life will go back to normal tomorrow, and they’d be smart to wait and try again then. I have to count on them not being too persistent, and for now I’ll just relish in the fact that they had a plan for today and we foiled it.
Also, when all the teachers were in the cafeteria, one of them pointed out to me that we’d now brought most of the staff into the line of fire. Jokingly, she wondered if that was the kids’ plan all along, to tell us about the food fight and put us on high alert in order to get all their teachers within noodle-throwing range. That would have been genius. It makes me want to go back and be twelve again… think about all the incredible things you could have gotten away with if you’d just planned a little better!
