I had a parent talk to me on Friday about how hungry she and her son are. Her son is a sweet, smart, quiet kid in my homeroom, and the mother has health problems and doesn’t work. She said they haven’t had food all week and don’t get more money to eat until Tuesday. The boy can eat breakfast and lunch at school, but she was terrified for the weekend because they get so hungry. One of his teachers apparently gives out $5 or $10 McDonald’s gift certificates in a raffle at the end of the week, and she was praying that he won the prize so that they wouldn’t have to go without food all weekend.
Our school gives two free healthy meals a day, and they also provide meals over the summer. I’ve worried about dinner before, but why have I never wondered what happened to kids on the weekends? Imagine Friday being a terrifying day because it meant no more food until Monday? This should not be happening.
