The new student in class today has not been to school in three years. Three years of school missed before the eighth grade. She was not sick. She was not in another country. She was not living alone on the streets. She was living right here and being kept home by her mother. This week, the state found out and took away mom’s custody. Today she’s in a classroom again, for the first time in years. And she’s in an eighth grade classroom while she is currently having trouble adding on her fingers.
I didn’t actually realize this happened in the land of guaranteed public education. What does a kid do at home all day, every day? And what’s going to happen to her when she’s not a kid anymore?
