I’m now part of the committee that writes math curriculum for the district. This means that today they put a sub in my classroom and I met with a group of other math teachers at the district office. We’re working on writing math problems that correctly address the state standard at the correct level of difficulty, and eventually these problems will be in a big item bank that all the teachers can use. This is an amazing idea, and it’s heaven for me because curriculum is my thing. They even managed to convince me that this would be worth being absent from my classroom, which I always hate. Let’s hope my kids didn’t kill each other today.
I think the most interesting thing about spending the day at an office, working with other adults, is that you can go to the bathroom any time you want. You can go as many times as you want. You can go for as long as you want. You can even just go because you feel like taking a walk. You don’t have to wait for lunch. You don’t have to explain to another adult that it’s a desperate emergency and ask if they’d be so kind as to watch your kids. This is fascinating.
