Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap
May 02 2010

Seriously, I hate Sundays. I put off everything during the busy week, figuring it’ll get done when I have time over the weekend. Then I spend my weekends having fun and being a normal person, and avoid work on Friday and Saturday. (I know that sounds irresponsible, but it is saving my life. In the real world, people laugh out loud in shock when I tell them I’m an 8th grade math teacher, and nobody ever calls me by my last name. I think it is ridiculous weekend adventures that have kept me from being one of the many, many people in TFA who hate their lives and are counting down the days until our two years are over. I’m not sorry about taking the work break; a happy teacher is a better teacher.) Then Sunday hits, and there are a million things to do and not enough hours in the day. It is just straight awful, every week. I never get it all done, so then it spills over into the next week, and I end up having to put new things off… until the weekend. And we start over. I hate Sundays.

I definitely feel you on this. I try to get as much done as possible during grad school classes so that I feel less stressed on the weekends… but there is always the headache that appears when I wake up on Sunday and think about what I have to do. Hang in there.

I’m a 2010 CM in New Mexico and I’ve been loving your blog. I think what you said here is really good advice, even though I can imagine how bad the Sundays are. It’s sad to hear that tons of people count down the days till they’re done with TFA, but I’ve never been responsible for a classroom, so I can’t judge!!

I know this is a bit late, but I agree with Catherine! I’ve been reading back through your posts. I DEFINITELY agree about having some time to do fun stuff on the weekends. I don’t do anything on Friday and Saturday, and it helps.

Keep up the posts! I don’t teach through TFA, but I’m a career changer teacher who started in the middle of the school year. I appreciate your tips and experiences.
