You know what’s nice? Teaching my kids what I want to teach them. Because I think it’s practical. And interesting. And even fun.
You know what else is nice? Taking a whole week to teach it to them. Because I have the time. And sometimes kids need more than an hour to learn a math topic.
You know what is nicer still? Having the kids so engaged in the practical/interesting/fun work they are doing that I can pull a small group to my front table and work with them on skills they’re still missing. Like, you know, MULTIPLICATION. Oh yeah, and DIVISION. Because they shouldn’t have made this far without that. And now I’m able to do in-class tutoring.
Don’t get me wrong, I support standardized testing. But life after AIMS is amazing.
